Rental scams
Someone sent me a check for more than the rent and wants the difference back. Is it a scam?

Short answer
Yes. This is the overpayment scam. The check or payment is fake or stolen, and when it bounces days or weeks later, your bank takes the full amount back from you, including the "extra" you already returned. It often targets people renting out a room to someone who says they're moving from abroad.
The story is usually similar: a student, nurse or engineer relocating from overseas wants your room without seeing it. A parent, employer or agent will send the payment. Then there's been a "mistake", so could you send back the extra by Zelle or wire, or pay their mover.
Banks often make deposited funds available within a day or two, before a fake check is caught. That's why the money shows up in your account and seems real. The check can bounce much later, and you're responsible when it does.
- Never accept more than the agreed amount.
- Never refund an overpayment. If it truly was an error, ask them to cancel it and send the correct amount.
- Before handing over keys, ask your bank to confirm the check has fully cleared, not just that the balance looks available.
- Be wary of anyone keen to rent without seeing the room or meeting you, even by live video.
