Are Facebook housing groups better than Zillow or Apartments.com for finding a place?

Short answer
Neither is better across the board. Listing sites are best for apartment complexes and managed buildings, with search filters and consistent details. Facebook housing groups are better for rooms, sublets, roommates and private landlords, and they let you see who is posting and ask questions. Most renters do best using both.
The biggest practical difference is who posts. Complexes pay for or syndicate listings to the big sites, so that is where their inventory lives. Individuals with one room or a summer sublet usually post where it is free and local, which is often a Facebook group.
Groups also let you work in the other direction. You can post what you are looking for, ask which neighborhoods are quiet, or get a quick opinion on whether a price is fair. Listing sites do not give you that.
The trade-off is that group posts vary in quality and anyone with an account can reply to you, so apply the same caution you would anywhere.
