Should I rent a room or a whole apartment?

Short answer
Rent a room if keeping costs low, moving in quickly or living near the center matters most to you. Rent a whole apartment if privacy, control over your space and a longer stay matter more. A room usually costs much less and needs less upfront money, while your own place costs more but comes with no one else's habits.
Renting a room often means furniture, internet and sometimes utilities are already set up, so your move-in costs and effort drop sharply. It can also be easier to qualify for, because the income requirement is based on a smaller rent. That makes rooms a common first step in a new city.
The trade-offs are real, though:
- You share a kitchen, bathroom and common space with people you may not have chosen.
- If you rent from a tenant rather than the owner, your rights can depend on their lease. Ask whether you will be on the lease.
- House rules on guests, noise and cleaning are set by others.
- You may have less notice if the household changes.
A whole apartment makes more sense if you work from home, have a partner who stays over often, keep odd hours or plan to stay several years.
