What happens if I leave stuff behind when I move out?

Short answer
The landlord can usually charge you to remove it, often out of your deposit. Many states set rules for belongings left behind, such as notifying you and storing items for a period before disposing of them, while others give landlords more freedom. Plan to take or get rid of everything before you return the keys.
If you left something valuable by mistake, contact the landlord in writing right away and ask to pick it up. The sooner you ask, the more likely it is still there.
Ways to clear out without paying removal fees:
- Sell or give away furniture in local buy-and-sell or housing groups in the weeks before you move
- Ask whether the next tenant wants items like a couch, desk or rug, and get the landlord's okay first
- Book a bulk trash pickup through your city, which often has to be scheduled ahead
- Use a donation pickup for furniture in good condition
Don't leave items at the curb or by the dumpster unless the building allows it. Illegal dumping can bring fines, and the landlord can charge you for hauling it away.
