How do I find an apartment in a new city before I move there?

Work in three stages: learn the local market from listings and housing groups, narrow it to two or three neighborhoods that fit your budget and commute, then tour shortlisted places by live video or on a short trip and apply with your documents ready. Verify every landlord before you pay anything.
The biggest mistake people make from far away is applying before they understand prices. Spend the first week or two just watching.
- Join the housing groups for your new city and save searches on a couple of listing sites. Note what places like the one you want actually rent for.
- Pick two or three neighborhoods using your commute, budget and what you need nearby.
- Post an in-search-of post with your budget, move-in date, preferred areas and a line about why you are moving.
- Contact listings quickly and book live video tours or an in-person trip.
- Have your application ready as one PDF: ID, proof of income, references.
- Confirm the landlord or manager is real, read the lease, then pay through a traceable method.
