How many housing groups should I join at once?

Short answer
Join a handful of groups for the area you're actually searching, usually two to five. Joining dozens of housing groups, especially across different cities, looks like a scam account to moderators and can get your requests declined. A few active, well-moderated local groups will show you most of what gets posted in that market.
A sensible set for most searches:
- The main housing group for the city or metro area.
- A group for the neighborhood or suburb you want, if one exists.
- The housing group for a nearby college, if you are a student or happy to live near one.
- A sublet or roommate group, if that is what you are after.
If you are choosing between two cities, joining groups in both is normal. Explain it in your membership answers ("deciding between Denver and Boulder for a job starting in July"). What moderators flag is an account sitting in housing groups for ten or twenty unrelated cities, because that is how scammers spread the same fake listing.
Once you have found a place, leave the groups you no longer need. Your notifications get quieter, and your profile looks clean if you search again later.
