How do I set up utilities when I move into a new apartment?

Short answer
Ask the landlord which utilities you pay and which companies serve the address, then contact each one a week or two before move-in to open an account in your name starting on your move-in date. Electricity and gas are the usual ones. Water, sewer and trash are often included or billed through the landlord.
- Ask for the list of providers and any account or meter numbers. In some areas you can choose your electricity supplier, in others there is only one.
- Sign up by phone or online with your lease, move-in date and ID ready. Some providers run a credit check.
- Expect a utility deposit if you have little credit history. A letter from a previous utility showing on-time payments sometimes gets it waived.
- Photograph the meters on move-in day so your first bill starts from the right reading.
- Set up autopay or reminders so a missed bill doesn't lead to a shutoff.
If you have roommates, decide before move-in whose name each account goes under and how the bills will be split. The account holder is responsible for the full bill.
At your old place, schedule a stop date for the day after you move out so you aren't billed for the next tenant, and update your address with the post office and your bank.
