When should I set up internet for a new apartment?

Short answer
Book it two to three weeks before you move in, because installation appointments fill up, especially around the start of the month and the school year. First check which providers actually serve your unit, and ask the landlord whether the building has an exclusive provider, a bulk deal already included in your rent, or existing wiring.
Search providers using your exact address with the unit number. Coverage can differ between buildings on the same street, and some buildings include service in a required monthly fee, so you may not need to sign up at all.
Before you sign up:
- Ask the landlord or previous tenant which provider they used and where the jack or fiber box is
- Compare the promotional price with the price after the promotion ends
- Check contract length, equipment rental fees and installation charges
- Ask whether you can use your own modem or router to avoid monthly rental fees
If installation isn't available until after you move in, a phone hotspot can cover a few days. Some providers can activate service without a technician visit if the unit already has a working connection, which is much faster.
When you move out, return rented equipment and get a receipt. Unreturned modems and routers are a common surprise charge on final bills.
