Is Facebook Marketplace or a housing group better for finding a rental?

Short answer
Use both. Housing groups tend to have more rooms, sublets, lease takeovers and roommate searches, while Marketplace leans toward whole apartments and listings from property managers. Moderated groups have people review each post before it appears. Marketplace listings rely on automated checks instead, so screen them at least as carefully.
How they differ in practice:
- Marketplace: a search with filters for price, bedrooms and location, plus a map. Good for whole units and for comparing prices quickly.
- Housing groups: a local feed of rooms, sublets, takeovers, roommate searches and ISO posts, many of which never appear on Marketplace.
- Groups let you post what you are looking for and have people come to you, which Marketplace is not built for.
On both, you are dealing with a stranger, and the same rules apply: see the place in person or on a live video call with someone you can verify, and never pay a deposit before a viewing.
