How do I find a sublet?

Short answer
Look where tenants post their own places: local Facebook housing groups, college housing groups near universities, and short-term rental listings. Search for your dates and neighborhood, post what you need, and reply fast. Before paying anything, see the place and confirm the person has the right to sublet it.
Sublets are posted by individual tenants, not big landlords, so they are scattered. Cast a wide net:
- City housing groups, searching words like "sublet," "sublease," "summer" and your month
- College groups near any campus, even if you are not a student, since students sublet heavily for summer and semesters abroad
- An "ISO sublet" post of your own with exact dates, budget, area, and whether you need furnished
- Asking your employer, internship program or school, which often keep lists
Our college groups and city groups lists are a good starting point.
Be flexible where you can. Sublet dates are set by the tenant's plans, so a place available the 5th through the 28th may be easy to get if you can bridge a few days. Many sublets appear only a few weeks before they start, so posting early helps people with something coming up find you.
When you find one, ask for a video or in-person viewing, a copy of the sublease, and whether the landlord has approved it. Pay only once you have seen the place and signed.
